As the clock strikes the hour, Harry wishes himself a quiet “Happy Birthday, Harry.” Suddenly, there’s a loud bang on the door, and Hagrid enters. Hagrid introduces himself as the Keeper of the Keys at Hogwarts and explains that Harry is a wizard who has been accepted to Hogwarts to study magic. Harry discovers that the Dursleys have always been aware of his magical abilities but tried to suppress them and make him “normal.” Moreover, Harry learns the truth about his parents’ murder by Voldemort.
The next day, Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley in London to shop for school supplies. Their first stop is the wizarding bank, Gringotts, where Harry is shown his family vault and realizes that his parents have left him a comfortable fortune of wizarding gold. During their visit, Hagrid makes a stop at Vault 713 and removes a mysterious package, explaining it’s Hogwarts business for Dumbledore. After the bank, Harry visits Madam Malkin’s Robes for his school uniform and Flourish and Blotts for his magical textbooks, as well as other shops for parchment and potion ingredients. Hagrid gifts Harry a snowy owl as a birthday present, and Harry names her Hedwig. Their last stop in Diagon Alley is Ollivander’s, where Harry purchases a magic wand that shares a core with Voldemort’s wand.
A month later, Harry leaves Little Whinging to catch the Hogwarts Express, which departs from King’s Cross Station at Platform 9 and 3/4. Initially unsure how to access the platform, he receives help from Mrs. Weasley, who shows him the way. On the train, Harry befriends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, two first-year students with their own insecurities about entering Hogwarts. Ron worries about living up to his family’s legacy, while Hermione, being Muggle-born, is anxious about her background. Harry also meets Neville Longbottom, a forgetful first-year with a pet toad named Trevor, and Draco Malfoy, an arrogant student who offers Harry unfriendly advice on whom to befriend.
Upon arrival at Hogwarts, the students are sorted into one of the four houses: Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. Harry fears he might be placed in Slytherin, Voldemort’s former house, and makes a special request to the Sorting Hat to be placed anywhere else. The hat ultimately places Harry, along with Ron and Hermione, in Gryffindor.
As the school year begins, Harry attracts more attention than ever, especially due to his lightning bolt-shaped scar. Although most of his classes are enjoyable, Professor Snape, the Potions Master, seems determined to dislike Harry, and Harry notices his scar tingling whenever Snape glares at him. After their first potions lesson, Harry and Ron visit Hagrid’s hut near the Forbidden Forest. There, Hagrid accidentally reveals that Vault 713 was broken into shortly after their visit to Diagon Alley.
During their first flying lesson, Neville breaks his wrist and must be taken to the hospital wing. Malfoy grabs Neville’s Remembrall and flies into the air with it. Harry flies after Malfoy to retrieve it and makes a spectacular dive to catch it just inches from the ground. Professor McGonagall witnesses Harry’s impressive flying skills and, instead of punishing him, arranges for him to play Seeker on the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
Malfoy challenges Harry to a midnight duel to settle the score, and Ron, Hermione, and Neville accompany him to ensure he stays out of trouble. The four accidentally enter a forbidden corridor and come across a three-headed dog guarding a trapdoor. They leave quickly, but not before Harry deduces that the dog is guarding the mysterious package from Vault 713.
On Halloween, the school is alerted to a dangerous troll in the castle, and the students are escorted back to their dormitories. Harry and Ron set out to find Hermione, who is unaware of the warning in the girl’s bathroom. They accidentally lock the troll in with Hermione but manage to knock it unconscious. Hermione takes the blame for the encounter, and the trio becomes fast friends. During Harry’s first Quidditch match, his broom is jinxed by a mysterious source. Hermione and Ron suspect Snape after Hermione sees him muttering to himself. She sets Snape’s robes on fire just in time for Harry to regain control of his broom and win the game dramatically.
Harry stays at Hogwarts with Ron over the Christmas holidays, enjoying wizard chess and researching Nicolas Flamel. On Christmas morning, Harry receives several gifts, including a rare Invisibility Cloak, accompanied by a note that says it belonged to his father. That night, Harry uses the cloak and discovers a large mirror in a room. When he looks into it, he sees his deceased parents and other unknown relatives. The next night, Harry rushes back to the mirror to see his family again but is surprised by Professor Dumbledore, who explains that the Mirror of Erised shows the deepest desires of one’s heart but does not provide truth or knowledge. He also informs Harry that the mirror will be moved, and he should not seek it out again.
After the holidays, Harry, Ron, and Hermione discover Nicolas Flamel’s identity: he is the only known maker of the Sorcerer’s Stone, which grants immortality. They realize that the three-headed dog is guarding the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Harry suspects that Snape is planning to steal it. They also learn that Hagrid is raising an illegal dragon given to him by a stranger in exchange for information about the three-headed dog. Harry and Hermione attempt to send the dragon to Ron’s brother, Charlie, but get caught just after handing it off.
As punishment, Harry, Hermione, Malfoy, and Neville are sent into the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid to find a wounded unicorn. While searching, Harry and Malfoy encounter the body of the unicorn and a hooded figure drinking its blood. Malfoy runs away in fear, but Harry is paralyzed by pain from his scar as the figure approaches. A centaur named Firenze rescues Harry, explaining that the hooded figure was Voldemort, drinking unicorn blood to stay alive until he can steal the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Determined to prevent Voldemort from obtaining the Stone, Harry, Ron, and Hermione decide to retrieve it themselves. They navigate the obstacles protecting the Stone: getting past the three-headed dog using music, escaping Devil’s Snare, catching a flying key, winning a life-sized enchanted chess game, and solving a potion riddle. Hermione solves the potion riddle, allowing Harry to continue to the final challenge alone.
In the final chamber, Harry is astonished to find Professor Quirrell, not Snape, with the Mirror of Erised. Quirrell reveals that he has been serving Voldemort all along. Voldemort, whose face is on the back of Quirrell’s head, orders Quirrell to use Harry to get the Stone. When Quirrell touches Harry, his skin blisters. Voldemort orders Quirrell to kill Harry, but Harry’s touch causes Quirrell great pain, as Harry’s mother’s sacrificial love protects him. Voldemort escapes, and Harry passes out from the pain.
Harry wakes up in the hospital wing, where Dumbledore explains that Quirrell couldn’t touch him because of his mother’s protection. Only Harry could retrieve the Stone from the mirror because he didn’t want to use it. Although Voldemort escaped, Harry’s actions prevented him from returning to power for now.
At the end-of-year feast, Dumbledore awards last-minute points to Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville, allowing Gryffindor to win the House Cup. Harry considers it the best night of his life and returns to the Dursleys for the summer, content with the friendships he has made at Hogwarts.
